John J. Whelan, a principal of the firm, has handled a broad range of legal matters, including extensive representation of creditors’ rights, bankruptcy, small business loan workouts and commercial and consumer litigation.
While a student at Temple University School of Law, Mr. Whelan served as a legal intern for the Delaware County Legal Assistance Corporation in 1983. He was a Delaware County Assistant District Attorney from 1986-91, serving as Trial Team Leader responsible for case management, assignment and supervision of a trial team. As an Assistant District Attorney in Delaware County, Jack Whelan prosecuted a myriad of criminal defendants, ranging from misdemeanor and felony cases to high profile murder trials.
Mr. Whelan was elected to a four-year term beginning in 2006 on Delaware County Council, the governing body for Delaware County. In 2008, he was appointed as vice-chairman of County Council. He was recently re-elected to a four-year term beginning January 2010 and has been appointed the Chairman of County Council for the four-year term. Previously, he had served, from 1996 until he took his seat on County Council, as a Commissioner of the Fifth Ward in Ridley Township. While a Ridley Township Commissioner, Mr. Whelan served as the board’s Vice President and as Chairman of Police and Public Safety. He currently serves as Municipal Solicitor for Eddystone, Prospect Park and Folcroft Boroughs as well as for the Ridley Park Borough Zoning Hearing Board.
A graduate of Temple University (B.A. in Criminal Justice, cum laude, 1982) and Temple University School of Law (J.D., 1985), he has handled numerous foreclosures and debt collection matters for national and local lenders in the Southeastern Pennsylvania region. His extensive courtroom background has been an invaluable tool in collection litigation and effectively settling and resolving cases after the commencement of a civil claim or complaint.
